FR Americas Championship
Formula Regional Americas Championship is the second step on America’s FIA development ladder and the Road to F1.
In 2017, the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) created the global Formula Regional Championship concept to provide young drivers around the world with the opportunity to take the next step from Formula 4 in the world of open-wheel racing. By 2018, SCCA Pro Racing joined forces with the FIA to bring the model to the Americas through the F3 Americas Championship—now known as FR Americas.
Open to drivers ages 16 and up, the spec series uses locally-sourced components to aid in both affordability and availability. The Ligier JS F3 chassis is manufactured in Denver, N.C., while the 270-horsepower Honda Civic Type R engine is built in Anna, Ohio and Hankook Tires are marketed and distributed out of Nashville, Tenn.
One of FR Americas’ greatest strengths when compared to other young driver programs is the advanced driver development offerings. Between series-organized learning opportunities and analytical work carried out by the drivers and their engineers, FR Americas prepares drivers in a unique way. The capped costs allow multi-car and single-car teams the same opportunity of success, while the cars allow for significant setup adjustments to expand drivers’ technical knowledge and provide them with the experience required to move up the open wheel ladder. With driving training, unmatched affordability and strong manufacturer support, FR Americas competitors can grow and succeed into the higher levels of motorsports.
In 2021, FR Americas became part of SpeedTour motorsports festivals through Parella Motorsports Holdings’ (PMH) purchase of the championship’s commercial rights. The agreement has provided FR Americas with the opportunity to get in front of new fans and sponsors, and has also opened up various scholarships and programs to get more drivers behind the wheel.
The PMH Powering Diversity Scholarship was established in 2021 as a way to create a more diverse field of drivers at the grassroots level, while specifically assisting both female and minority drivers in advancing their career. Likewise, the FR Americas Masters Cup contingency program is available for drivers age 35 and over.
